As a Math/Science Magnet School, C.E. Byrd has a responsibility to develop a modern workforce with academic leaders that are well-prepared to make intelligent decisions about the future of our community and our world. A critical mind that is adept at discerning fact and establishing methodologies to test and reason is a hallmark of a modern society in our global world.

Through the generous donations to the C.E. Byrd Foundation, Byrd launched the Bio Experimental Lab in 2020. This lab rivals labs that are traditionally found on college campuses. Now the science department has a world class lab to deliver a curriculum for all grades that will be heavy on research. This curriculum will develop student inquiry from conceptualization of phenomena through conclusion and application.

A Wet Lab is a type of laboratory in which a wide range of experiments are performed. Students are challenged to develop their own line of inquiry and develop their biotechnological techniques through hypotheses testing, data analysis and conclusion development.

The Lab will contain BIO-RAD Instructional Equipment, Vernier LabQuest 2 Sensors and Probes and other professional equipment to support biotechnology and molecular biology applications. Experimentation can lead students through immersive 2 to 5-day labs (with extension and inquiry) that ultimately allow students to design and conduct their own experiments. The impressive diversity of kits will cover a wide range of Life Science core content including:

About The Lab

The Lab contains BIO-RAD Instructional Equipment, Vernier LabQuest 2 Sensors and Probes and other professional equipment to support biotechnology and molecular biology applications. Experimentation can lead students through immersive 2 to 5-day labs (with extension and inquiry) that ultimately allow students to design and conduct their own experiments. The impressive diversity of kits will cover a wide range of Life Science core content including:

  • Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

  • Biofuels

  • Genetics

  • Forensic DNA

  • Animal Sciences

  • Biotechnology

  • Microbes

Benefits:

  • Increased Comprehension: Shift from memorization to exploration/discovery

  • Exposure to modern lab equipment

  • Lab experience begins as early as Freshman year

  • Increased opportunities for Scholarships

  • Participation in original research

  • Professional Mentorships in students’ chosen field of study
